This Girl’s Got To Play (Joyce Cooling)

I accompanied Ooyah this morning for the first of three consecutive orientation sessions, as she started her first playgroup at a Star Tots Playgroup branch near our place. After breakfast at McCafe, we headed to the place and as usual, were the first ones at the door and had to wait for about 20 minutes for it to be opened while joined by a few more toddlers with their parents, grandparents and maids in tow.

It was a relatively smooth affair. No tears whatsoever from our little girl as she joined a few of the children playing with building blocks while we listened as the staff briefed us on the centre and its management style. Decked in her newly-bought bright lime green polo T-shirt and yellow skirt with multi-coloured polka dotted shoes, complete with a Mickey Mouse bag, I followed the rest of the parents as I changed her into her new red uniform.

It seems that Ooyah’s batch is the first one for this recently opened branch. As with most parents sending their child to a playgroup for the very first time, we had some queries with regards to the general safety within the centre. Most were being reasonable except for one who was being rather all dramatic with the staff in charge, to the point of pissing me off. It’s just a freaking playgroup lasting only 2 hours daily for goodness sake, not even a childcare arrangement lasting a whole day.

Anyway, the children all came away with awards in the form of star stickers pasted on their hands for helping to clear up the toys and being well-behaved throughout the session. I don’t know if it’s a daily ritual. We’ll see in the next coming days.
